With the arrival of Spring, medications I decided to show some skin in my Monki scuba two piece which teamed with a cool blue organza shirt. I then finished my look with my Balenciagas and Denim Louis Vuitton bag. I love the pops of colour from my bag and shirt- accessories are a great way to introduce colour to a muted outfit! P.S I am in love with Monki right now, you'll be seeing a lot of it.

If there is one piece of advice I could give to any young person, symptoms regardless of your field or your interests it would be to travel. Experiencing different cultures and people is eye opening and something I am happy I get to do as part of my job, medical but I guess I have never really sat down and had a good think as to how travelling as a model is so different to just going on holiday, about it you really do see things in a different perspective.

First of all, I do not get to stay in fancy hotels all the time or get glamorous treatment 24/7. I remember when my friend asked if I had a chauffeur to drive me to castings when I first went to New York for a month when I was 17. HA. Was I even given a map? I remember being on the plane thinking it would be like a faux America’s Next Top Model- It was more like America’s Next Top Hostel in the sense that I was living with 12 girls, had my food stolen and of course we never received Tyra Mail. As much as my agency in London tried to prepare me, it was overwhelming being thrown into a new city for a month for my first season of Fashion Week.

Although I have been to a lot of different and amazing places, more time than not I am going for work meaning I fly there, go to the hotel in a cab, sleep, wake up for work then fly back home- I could literally be anywhere in the world. I remember when I booked a hair commercial that was being shot in Thailand; I imagined me coming out of the ocean in slow mo, Baywatch style and sunbathing in between takes. It was more like “hi here’s the air-conditioned house you will be shooting in for the duration of your stay here and we are only here because the production cost less”. Fashion Week is really the only time when I travel where I actually get to properly see and experience the country ( while running around to castings).

Shooting my hair commercial in Thailand.

As you get older, you get braver and try to venture out more and not make your stay abroad all about work but still, it is not the same as being with your friends or family; experiencing a place alone can be fulfilling and exciting but it doesn’t change the fact that it would be even better with people you love. Places like Dubai and Miami are amazing but f*ck going to the aquarium or sky diving or attempting to turn up on your own! However, it forces you to be not just okay being by yourself but to be happy and enjoy your own company which is something I know a lot of people couldn’t hack for longer than a day. I discovered it was okay to talk to yourself if no one was around and buss jokes- I am incredibly funny by myself anyway. I will happily take myself to any restaurant and eat three courses on my own now because I had no choice at times.

Last January is when I took a big step and actually rented a place in New York as going back and forth (sometimes going to New York for less than 24 hours) was a waste of money and childish. I didn’t want to be away from my friends and family or have to actually get comfortable in the city and settle; all the other times I had a return date in my mind which I would count down to, this time was different. Not only did I have to grasp being away, I had to actually build a life there too and grow up really quickly and not make the same mistake twice. Models have to change from visitors to fully-fledged New Yorkers/ Londoners etc at the drop of a hat because you have to go where the work is and that doesn’t always mean your hometown. I know girls from Brazil or Eastern Europe who go home once a year or less and are under the age of 21; these girls make me thankful that I am able to go back to London and work there too.

Travelling as a model makes you stronger because you never really know what is round the corner and you just have to deal with it. If you’re treated badly on a job, no one can come and rescue you, you have to make a decision by yourself that is still professional which isn’t always easy. If you get lost, your Dad isn’t coming to pick you up- my Dad replies back to my Whats Apps the next day if I’m lucky so I doubt he could turn all “Liam Nelson from Taken” to find me.

Just because you see a model post a cute selfie on set in L.A doesn’t mean she wasn’t exhausted or went to a rooftop bar after for cocktails or flew first class to get there; if she did, it’s because she earned it and flew on the back of that airbus more times than you know before she could demand a better seat from the client. No, my travel isn’t all expenses paid and model apartments are not free either; only if I am going to the place directly for a paying job will my flight and accommodation be paid so it’s not necessarily a free trip around the globe either. Travelling as a model isn’t always as glamorous as people think it is, it is a part of the job not necessarily always an added bonus.

Travelling from 17 has been a big life lesson for me and I am really appreciative of every stamp in my passport as each of them represents a time I could’ve become homesick and given up or a time I experienced something I will never forget and I urge every young person to just go out into the world. Don’t be scared if people don’t speak your language, don’t think the waitress is judging you when you say “table for one please” and don’t be afraid of being alone. Regardless of how you get out there, just make sure you do.
